Kiwi arrested in Thailand after allegedly smuggling cocaine in passport

A 24-year-old Kiwi has been arrested in Phuket international airport after allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country, hidden in his passport, the New Zealand Herald reports.

The arrest took place on April 8 at around 3pm after the discovery was made during a routine check at the international arrivals hall.

The New Zealand Herald reported the officers discovered 0.18g of cocaine hidden inside a small reasonable plastic bag, which had been tucked into the suspects passport.

The man was taken into custody where he would be “charged accordingly” according to Phuket Airport Immigration, the New Zealand Herald reports.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) said they were working with Bangkok officials to provide consular assistance.

MFAT did not provide any more details citing privacy reasons.

The name of the man has not been released.

Thailand has strict drug laws with severe penalties, which can include life in prison.
