The Picnic Basket to close in Durham after 33 years
The Picnic Basket, on New Elvet, took to social media yesterday (April 29), to share the news, following a βdifficult decision.β
The owners said: βAfter 33 wonderful years at our New Elvet home, the time has come to close our doors.
βDue to the rising operational costs that many small businesses are facing we have made the difficult decision to close our doors and concentrate on our kiosk in the marketplace.
βFrom the bottom of my heart, thank you.β
The business was established in the 1990s and claims to be Durham’s oldest independent sandwich bar. It prides itself on their award-winning homemade sandwiches.
The owners thanked their βincredibleβ customers and staff for their support throughout the last 33 years.
They said: βTo our incredible customers who made us part of your daily routine and to my fabulous staff past and present – who poured their souls into every sandwich. You are the heartbeat of The Picnic Basket.
βWe arenβt disappearing – you can still get your favourite fix at our Prince Bishops Kiosk on the corner of Durham Market Place.β
Since announcing the news, many longstanding customers took to social media to share their support.
One person said: βSo sorry to see New Elvet close- it has been part of the Durham fabric for ever, must have been a difficult decision. 33 amazing years is something to be really proud of.
βGlad you are continuing at the Market Place, long may it thrive.”
While another said: βSuch a shame that high costs are driving local businesses to close premises! So happy to hear you are still going.β
While an official closing date has yet to be announced, you can still find sandwich bar at 7 New Elvet, Durham, DH1 3AQ.
