Fifteen-year-old Tauranga runner Sam Ruthe will attempt to become the youngest person ever to run a sub-four minute mile in Auckland tonight.

Ruthe’s had a remarkable season including winning the 3000m national title, and in doing so became the country’s youngest senior national champ in any event.
In Dunedin earlier this month at the New Zealand track and field champs champs he tied with two-time Olympian Sam Tanner to share the 1500m senior final.
Tanner will act as the pace setter for Ruthe in his mile attempt at Mount Smart Stadium at 8pm.
Norway’s Jackob Ingebrigtsen currently holds the record as the youngest runner to go under four minutes for the mile, having run 3 minutes 58 points 07 seconds in 2017 when he 16 years and 250 days old.
