New Zealand triathlete Hayden Wilde has been able to leave hospital following a crash earlier this month in Japan.

The Olympic silver medallist was hospitalised after suffering broken bones and injured lungs in a bike crash.

In a social media post Wilde said because no surgery was needed on his damaged lungs, he was able to leave hospital and would head back to his base in Belgium.

He confirmed he had broken five ribs and a hairline fracture to a sixth.

He broke a shoulder blade, injured his lungs and required a few stitches to a hip injury.

Wilde admitted that he was not out of the woods yet, and had a long journey back.

Following the Paris Olympics, Wilde announced he would take a two-year break from the Olympic distance event in an effort to refresh himself for another tilt at an Olympic gold medal.

Since then he had been competing in longer-distance triathlons as well as running and cycling events.
