Peterlee Caterpillar plant celebrates as it hits 70,000 trucks
Caterpillarโs Peterlee facility has served as the global manufacturing hub for CATโs articulated trucks for more than 30 years.
Located in the North East of England, the plant builds trucks that are sold and used around the world by customers in mining and construction.

Adam Freeman, director of product value stream at Caterpillar Peterlee, said: “This is a remarkable milestone that reflects decades of teamwork, expertise, and dedication across every area of our operation.
“Since the first articulated truck rolled off the line more than 50 years ago, our teams have continued to push boundaries in safety, quality, innovation and customer productivity.
“Reaching 70,000 units is not only a testament to the strength of our product, but also to the commitment and craftsmanship of the people who design, develop and build it.”

The site was originally established as DJB Engineering in the 1970s and became part of Caterpillar in the mid-1990s.
Since then, Caterpillar has continuously invested in advanced manufacturing technologies at the Peterlee facility, including robotics.

The plant employs hundreds of skilled workers from across County Durham and the wider region, and many employees have worked at the site for much of their careers.
Caterpillar says it is not uncommon for multiple generations of the same family to have worked at the facility, underlining its deep ties to the local community.
Jason Maw, director of operations, said: “Weโre incredibly proud of our longstanding presence in the community.
“Many of our employees have been with us for decades, starting through our long-established apprenticeship programme, and itโs not unusual to see parents, children, and even grandchildren working here.
“That connection to the town is a huge part of who we are.”
Caterpillar Peterlee is also committed to developing future talent through apprenticeships, training programmes, and partnerships with local colleges and universities.
The company continues to invest in automation and research and development.
It also benefits from access to a nearby quarry, which is used for endurance testing of its vehicles.
Articulated trucks produced at the Peterlee site are exported worldwide and play a key role in building infrastructure.
