PCC Joy Allen supports North East Anti-Racism Coalition

She becomes the latest public figure to support the North East Anti-Racism Coalition’s (NEARC) β€˜Become the Bridge’ campaign, which calls on organisations to actively confront and address racism within their systems and operations.

By signing the anti-racism pledge, Ms Allen has committed to developing an anti-racism strategy over the next 12 months.

She said: “Become the Bridge is more than just a symbolic signature.

“It’s about leading by example and ensuring my office and everyone we work with is committed to the same principles and values to conquer division and eradicate racism from our communities.

“Actions speak far louder than words and I am proud to be part of this movement.

“Racial prejudice segregates and excludes.

“It weakens the very foundations of our communities and undermines everything we stand for here in County Durham and Darlington.”

As part of her Police, Crime and Justice Plan, Ms Allen has already pledged to tackle hate crime and improve support for victims, while promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion both within the force and her office.

She has also promised to monitor the effectiveness of efforts to address issues around diversity, equality, and human rights.

The North East Anti-Racism Coalition aims to make the region a place that actively stands against racism and religious hatred.

The Commissioner joins a growing list of individuals and organisations backing the movement.

She said: “As Commissioner, I refuse to give racism any room to damage or undermine our way of life, or cause fear, distrust and isolation.

“Our county is a welcoming place for all.

“And I will see to it that it remains that way and becomes even safer, stronger and more inclusive in the future.”

Earlier this month, more than 100 public and voluntary organisations attended a Become the Bridge event in Durham for an update on NEARC’s latest research.

Ms Allen is already involved in promoting anti-racism in the community through her support of the charity Show Racism the Red Card, which runs workshops with school children to encourage conversations about racism and promote understanding about the harm inflicted on communities through unacceptable attitudes and stereotypes.
