The Urban Deli at Darlington Market announces closure
The Urban Deli, which has been based in the town’s market hall since November 2023, has decided to close its stall for good from today (Monday, May 5).
The specialist retailer was known for stocking a range of local products from businesses within 50 miles of Darlington, from cheeses and pastries to sweet treats.
However, after 18 months, the stall will be closing, with bosses saying that it has been unable to support itself, with the exception of the Christmas period.
A statement online thanked customers, saying it has loved being a part of the market each day.

It said: “Unfortunately, the decision has been made to close The Urban Deli.
“The idea behind The Urban Deli was never to get rich, but for it to support itself and a modest wage. Unfortunately, with the exception of a couple of Christmas months, this has never happened and has now become impossible to stock and maintain.
“We have all loved being a part of Darlington Market as traders day in, day out. From starting in November 2023 to taking control in November 2024, I had envisaged being part of the market for years to come.
“I’d like to thank everyone of you who has made the effort to come see us over the last 18 months. If I could have thanked you all personally, I would have.
“All the best to the other traders, thank you especially to Vicki Haus of Moss florist, Katherine and the whole team at Jackson’s Butchers, the lovely Robin Blair and all of the street food huts and Darlington Market team.
“The market needs to stay, it’s part of Darlington and its history. And so am I, so I have no doubt I’ll see many of you soon! Thank you again.”
Darlington Market has faced criticism in recent years following the closure of several traditional traders, some operating within the site for decades.

It was reported in February that an advisory board would be set up to monitor the progress of the market amid concerns for its future, following growing pressure for Darlington Borough Council to regain control of the facility.
None of the initial six traders that opened in the market in August 2021 remain – with &Gravy and Fusión Mexicana being two of the recent departees.
However, several stores have opened up recently too, including the Marketplace Fish N Chips and Casa del Alma – with new bakery Shape: Patisserie & Bake due to open this week.
