STACK rubbishes claims it has ‘shelved’ Bishop Auckland site
The popular shipping container firm is due to open a new multi-storey complex on Newgate Street, in the space of the now demolished WHSmith and Mothercare units.
But last month, officials confirmed that work had been temporarily halted due to structural issues with nearby buildings, while also admitting there was an unrelated funding gap.
CEO Neill Winch said it remained “fully committed” to opening in Bishop Auckland, and said once the site is deemed safe, work will continue.
However, rumours have circulated online this week that STACK had “pulled out” of the project and that the development had been “shelved”.
A spokesperson for the firm confirmed to The Northern Echo today (Thursday, March 20) that there is no truth in the reports, and reiterated that the company is still committed to the site.

As previously reported, STACK, which has venues in Newcastle, Middlesbrough, and Seaburn, will have a selection of bars and street food vendors around a central ‘plaza’ once open in Bishop Auckland. It will also feature a rooftop bar.
Plans for the new multi-storey site on Newgate Street were approved in 2023 but have been repeatedly held up before and after the demolition of the former WHSmith store.
STACK confirmed in late February that the Bishop Auckland venue would open this year, with a date earmarked for summer.
Mr Winch previously said: “We remain fully committed to bringing STACK to Bishop Auckland and are actively working to close a funding gap to ensure the successful delivery of the project.
“Our decision to temporarily pause work on-site is unrelated to this funding matter. The pause is due to movement detected in a building adjacent to the STACK site, which is currently being propped up.

“As a precaution, we have stepped back while the situation is monitored.
“As soon as it has been established that there is no further movement and the site is deemed safe to proceed, we will resume work.
“We appreciate the patience and understanding of the local community and look forward to delivering an exciting new venue for Bishop Auckland.”
