STACK Bishop Auckland and Durham to open this year

STACK in both Durham City Centre and Bishop Auckland will finally be open for business by the end of this year, it has been confirmed, following funding and construction setbacks at both sites.

Plans to convert the former M&S on Durham’s Silver Street into a STACK were greenlit in April 2023 with a target opening date being that winter. However, this has been continually pushed back due to “unforeseen delays”.

Bishop Auckland’s new STACK on Newgate Street complete with a rooftop bar will open this summer, despite work currently being paused due to a “funding gap” and “structural issues”.

Plans for the new multi-storey site on Newgate Street were approved in 2023 but have been repeatedly held up before and after the demolition of the former WHSmith store.

Once complete the new venue is set to have a selection of bars and street food vendors based around a central ‘plaza’ area.

Neill Winch, CEO of STACK, said: “We are at varying stages with our sites in Sheffield, Leeds, Carlisle, Wigan, Northampton, and Manchester, but we are making great progress with all of them.

“We had an incredible year, with all sites performing well above expectations.

“It’s clear that our formula works – a carefully curated mix of excellent quality street food, vibrant bars, and first-class entertainment tailored for everyone.”

Elsewhere in the region, Newcastle’s second STACK at Worswick Chambers will open in spring and its new Whitley Bay venue in the former Empress Ballroom is scheduled to open in the winter.
