North East McDonald’s worker issues paper bag price update

Claire Armstrong, a TikTok content creator with almost 17,000 followers, took to the platform to speak to her fans – and wider McDonald’s customer base – about the worry that all stores in the country would be introducing a charge for takeaway paper bags.

Some customers who enjoy Ronald’s delicacies – including Big Macs, McNuggets, and Fillet O Fish – had spotted a sign pop up on their kiosk purchases indicating that paper bags for takeaways would cost an extra 10p.

“I’ve been noticing this at work,” Ms Armstrong says in her video.

“The kiosks have had an update and it’s saying [there’s a charge] on it, but if you read it, it says Scotland and Wales.”

By law, all retailers in Scotland must charge a minimum of 10p for each new single-use carrier bag, whether it is plastic, paper, or plant based – this has been the case since 2022.

“For some reason, our kiosks have that [charge] on, so people are panicking, thinking they’re going to have be paying for a bag,” Ms Armstrong said.

“You don’t, so don’t panic.”

So, Big Mac munchers in the North East can breathe a sigh of relief that they do not have to pay an extra 10p on top of the cost of their meal in order to take it away in a paper bag.
