Befriending bench set up in Darlington to tackle loneliness

The ‘Befriending Bench’ has been set up at the Cornmill Centre to encourage conversation and foster connections.

The bench is a space where people can sit, chat, and learn about Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington’s befriending services for older people.

Fay Scullion, CEO of Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington, said: “Loneliness remains one of the biggest challenges facing older people today.

“The Befriending Bench is back to remind us all how important connection is.

“We hope it inspires people to take a moment, have a chat, and perhaps even consider joining our team of volunteers who bring vital companionship to older people in the community.”

The Cornmill Centre has partnered with Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington to host the bench.

Zoe France, manager of the Cornmill Centre, said: “We’re proud to welcome the Befriending Bench back to the Cornmill Centre.

“It’s a simple yet wonderful way to bring people together.

“If you see someone sitting on the bench, why not stop for a chat?

“It’s a great opportunity to meet someone new and make a difference.”

Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington is looking for volunteers to join its befriending programme.

Volunteers can offer regular phone calls, visits, or chats over cups of tea.

The Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington befriending team will be at the Befriending Bench on the first Thursday of each month from 10am to 4pm, up until the end of the year.

They’ll be available to offer advice, support, and information on how Age UK can help those aged 50 and over, as well as discuss volunteering opportunities with the charity.
