All 8 North East and North Yorkshire venues in Michelin Guide 2025
Eight North East and North Yorkshire restaurants have been recognised in the guide for the first time.
The ceremony saw the addition of another restaurant from the North East to the upper echelons of the British food industry after Forge at Middleton Lodge was awarded a Michelin star.
The restaurant, a 12-minute drive from Darlington town centre, is headed by chef Jake Jones who said the award was a ‘dream come true’.
Forge joins the small list of Michelin-star awarded venues in the region alongside Newcastle’s two recipients House of Tides and Solstice.
There are a variety of restaurants that have been named on the list for the first time. These include.
North East
Osters (Newcastle upon Tyne) – Seafood
The Michelin Guide says of the Newcastle restaurant: “The chefs are aware of the quality of their ingredients, eschewing overcomplication in favour of simple combinations.”
Six (Gateshead) – Modern Cuisine
Located at the top of the Baltic gallery on the Quayside, Michelin describe it as an ‘imposing and eye-catching presence in the city’.
The lunch menu includes dishes like Roast North Sea Cod and Steak of the Day.
Sonnet (Alnwick) – Modern Cuisine
The Northumberland restaurant is inspired by the poetry style. Therefore the food comes in 14 courses, like the 14 lines of a sonnet.
Michelin says Chef Gary McDermott and his partner Claudia have “created a deeply personal restaurant, with many of the dishes coming with a story attached.”
North Yorkshire
Chartwell (Alne) – Modern Cuisine
Located inside Aldwark Manor, this venue evens boasts a secret room hidden behind a bookcase.
The cooking itself consists of modernised classics on a choice of tasting menus according to Michelin.
Chef’s Table by Josh Barnes (Swinton) – Modern British
Given the name, it is no surprise that Chef Josh Barnes cooks food at this venue in front of the punters.
Michelin says: “The cooking comes with some creative twists, such as using locally foraged mushrooms to add richness to a chocolate mousse.”
Hansom (Bedale) – Modern Cuisine
Ran by Darlington chef Ruth Hansom, the Bedale-based restaurant utilises locally sourced ingredients.
“Eponymous Chef-Owner Ruth Hansom is a local and it shows in her cooking,” says Michelin.
It “skilfully spotlights wonderful produce from the surrounding area – be it Swaledale lamb or the famous Yorkshire rhubarb.”
Norman’s Neighbourhood Bistro (Kirkburton) – Mediterranean Cuisine, Asian Influences
“The great value sharing plates incorporate influences from both the Mediterranean and Japan, while the ‘eggy bread’ with bacon jam shows off the chefs’ playful side” says Michelin.
