Echo Comment on the continuing war in Ukraine
At least 18, including children, have been killed, about 100 injured.
Itβs just another day in a war on the European mainland.
A war that has slipped down the worldβs news agenda. A war that is literally intractable β intractable because there are no peace talks taking place at any stage, and even if there were, Vladimir Putinβs demand for Ukraineβs total capitulation would mean they couldnβt make any progress.
And so the war goes on. Civilians continue to die β in April, the UN human rights office said thatΒ since Russiaβs invasion in February 2022, 15,850 Ukrainian civilians had been killed and 44,801 injured.
These civilian figures are dwarfed by the enormous military losses which may now be as high as two million killed, missing or wounded.
Russia, which seems to be losing some territory on the ground, appears to be taking advantage of the US over-extending itself in the Middle East so there is a growing shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles that Ukraine uses to defend itself.
It is staggering that such carnage goes on in our back yard, on Europeβs doorstep, almost now without raised eyebrows, without Russia being condemned, without Ukraineβs basic right to freedom being upheld even by the supposed leader of the free world, the US president.
