Durham Tia’s Mexican Cantina to expand to Newcastle

Tia’s Mexican Cantina, based on Claypath, has been a staple of the city’s dining scene for years and was taken over by Kaleido Ltd around 12 months ago.

Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength.

Business entrepreneurs Steven Martin and Gabriel Petre have now announced plans for a major expansion with a 150-cover restaurant at The Gate, Newcastle.

Mr Martin said: “We are very excited about moving into The Gate.

“Tia’s in Durham has always been hugely popular and we thought the time was right to replicate that success in Newcastle and at The Gate.

“The menu will reflect all the favourite Tex Mex style dishes – with a few surprises thrown in at the same time.

“We can’t wait to get open and showcase everything that Tia’s Newcastle has to offer.”

The new restaurant will feature a range of classic Tex Mex dishes and will offer a special selection of celebrity tequilas.

A grand opening and launch party is planned for early autumn.

The expansion will create around 30 new jobs, and the company is currently recruiting.

Tia’s is seeking chefs, bar and waiting staff, and mixologists to help launch the Newcastle venue.

Inge Johnson-Mitchell, centre manager at The Gate, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming Tia’s Mexican Cantina to The Gate, and we know their vibrant mix of Mexican cuisine will be very well received.

“They will be an excellent addition to the centre, providing a range of favourite dishes – and not forgetting their famous frozen Margaritas – which will really enhance the variety of our offering.”
