County Durham farm cafe where locals go for best breakfasts


Broom House Farm’s coffee shop near Witton Gilbert and Chester-le-Street is β€œwell worth a visit” thanks to its use of local produce (including meat supplied by the farm itself).

Other visitors have said the foodie spot’s eggs Benedict β€œcouldn’t have been any better”.

The coffee shop at Broom House Farm (which has an award-winning farm shop) serves β€œdelicious” cakes and freshly ground coffee from Rounton’s Coffee Roasters, as well as breakfasts, brunches, light lunches and afternoon teas, all using local and seasonal ingredients wherever possible.

Broom House Farm’s website explains: β€œThe coffee shop is housed in a beautiful wooden building with living sedum roof and solar power.

β€œA cosy log burning stove waits to warm you on cold winter’s days.

β€œGlazed doors open out on to a large sun deck, where tables overlook a children’s play field, perfect for coffee in the sunshine.”

It adds: β€œBroom House Farm supplies all the meat for our delicious breakfasts and lunches and milk and the butter for our scones is supplied by Acorn organic dairy.Β 

β€œWe have vegetarian and vegan dishes and do ask if you have any dietary needs, we usually have alternatives.”

When it comes to the breakfast options at the coffee shop, customers can choose from the likes of the Broomy breakfast, which includes sausages, bacon rashers, black pudding, mushrooms, tomato, sourdough toast with bacon butter (can you believe it), baked beans and a free-range fried egg (Β£12).

Or, there is eggs Benedict, sweet potato and avocado hash, halloumi Benny, fruity granola bowl and warm banana bread.

There’s even the saddleback sausage butty, bacon butty, breakfast stottie, and mushroom and egg butty.

Additionally, in the warmer months of the year, visitors can make the most of the picnic field next to the car park area.

Broom House Farm shares: β€œBring picnic rugs/picnic chairs/tents/thermoses/BBQs for a traditional picnic.

β€œThe Picnic Field is near the to the cafe and close to the car park, which saves carrying heavy bags.

β€œEnjoy a picnic and then head to the coffee shop for coffee and cake.”

Over on Tripadvisor, Broom House Farm currently boasts a β€œvery good” 4.4/5 rating based on just under 400 reviews – 266 of which are rated as β€œexcellent”.

This recent guest commented: β€œBest breakfast I have had in a very long time. The atmosphere is calming. The staff are exceptional. Really well worth a visit.”

Another wrote: β€œRecently visited with my girlfriend both of us had eggs Benedict with black pudding.

β€œReally friendly staff, food and coffee was great will be back again soon!”

One visitor posted: β€œWe set Broom House as our midpoint of a dog walk on holiday.

β€œWe planned to get there and decide whether we wanted coffee and cake, breakfast or lunch.

β€œAfter a visit to the excellent farm shop, where we sorted meals for the week, we sat down in the cafe and settled on breakfast.

β€œWe had a full breakfast and eggs Benedict and they couldn’t have been any better.

β€œIt was clear that the ingredients were top quality and fresh and served piping hot.”

This happy customer complimented: β€œFirst visit and will definitely be back. Visited the cafe, which was very reasonably priced considering the high quality of the meat and food on offer.

β€œWe purchased a burger and breakfast stottie. Both arrived quickly and washed down with a large pot of tea.

β€œSpecial thank you to John the butcher for his advice in the shop and we walked away with the same sausages and burgers we had sampled earlier!

Elsewhere, Broom House Farm plans to reopen the Forest Adventure play area on Saturday, May 2, depending on the weather and completion of the winter repair work.

Please note the coffee shop is open Tuesdays – Sundays and closed on Mondays.

The kitchen closes at 3pm, and last breakfast orders are at 11.30am on β€œvery busy” days.

Meanwhile, the farm shop is shut on Sundays and Mondays.
