Concern after disorder at Seaham beach over Bank Holiday
Condemning the disruption caused to residents and visitors, councillors in Seaham have called for a more proactive response from authorities in responding to incidents during the warmer weather.Β
Residents reported large groups of children gathering on beaches and popular promenade areas around the town.Β
Councillor Jack McGlenen, of Dalton and Dawdon ward, said: βI was deeply shocked and saddened by the events that took place in Seaham.
“Having now seen some of the videos and heard from concerned residents, I completely understand the anger, upset, and frustration that many people in our community are feeling.Β
βWhat happened is extremely concerning, and I want to reassure everyone that these concerns are being taken seriously.β
Durham Police said it responded to reports of a βrowdy crowd of teenagersβ congregating on the beach at Seaham Harbour Marina on Monday, where a 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital.Β
The crowd dispersed once officers attended.
But in a warning to prevent future disorder, the force added: βIn light of the warm weather we are currently experiencing, we would encourage everyone, especially children, to be water aware and refrain from underage drinking, smoking or vaping.Β
βAny children found with these substances will have them removed and be dealt with.β
Cllr McGlenen visited community centres in the area earlier this week to speak to residents about the disorder as well as other issues affecting the community.Β
He added: βI will be speaking with fellow county councillors, local authorities, and the relevant departments to ensure this issue is fully raised and properly addressed.
βOur community deserves to feel safe, respected, and listened to, and I will be pushing for action and answers on behalf of residents.β
Cllr Andrew Harrison, Independent member for Seaham, said more must be done to prevent further issues.Β
He said: βHaving witnessed incidents in Seaham, I have contacted the police to look at how we can improve safety. This will be a multi-agency approach and will work with the town council, police and other stakeholders to improve the environment.
βSpeaking to people, it was established that large numbers of youths arranged to meet in Seaham, with some creating issues for local people and businesses.
βItβs clear that people will flock to the coast, not the first time things like this have happened.Β
βWe must be more proactive.β
