North East woman wins design award for Pocket Perch
The Pocket Perch, created by Ruth Jacobs, was inspired by her own experience of sitting on damp rocks and grass during walks.
This led her to design a product that is ‘sustainable, functional, and stylish’.
Her creation recently won the Gold Award for Best Product β Home and Gifts at Scotlandβs Trade Fair Spring 2025.

Ms Jacobs of Houghton-le-Spring came up with the idea after a seaside walk left her with a ‘wet bottom’.
She said: “I was sure there was something that I could come up with that people could carry with them really easily and would mean theyβd have a waterproof solution that they could use.”
With a background in sewing and clothes-making, Ms Jacobs decided to make the items herself, launching her company, Jacwicks Designs, to sell the Pocket Perch.
The product quickly became popular with walkers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
She even created a pet-friendly version, using sustainable materials wherever possible.

It was this design that won her the prestigious award.
Dawn Kane, from the Scottish Seabird Centre and one of the judges, said the Pocket Perch had won in the face of ‘extremely tough competition’.
She said: “We particularly like Jacwicks Designs, Pocket Perch as it is a really innovative idea.
“The fact that this can be easily stored and used for a day out at the beach/hill walking/camping makes it very versatile for someoneβs particular needs.
“Itβs waterproof which really is a must for the British weather and comes in a lot of fun designs.”
Ms Jacobs, who also sells the Pocket Perch at various outdoor attractions, gift shops, and garden centres across the UK, is thrilled with the win.
She said: “This recognition speaks volumes about the dedication and craftsmanship of this small UK business.
“The Pocket Perch was designed with the intention of offering an eco-friendly, practical, and beautifully crafted product that enhances outdoor experiences.
“Weβre delighted to see it being embraced by both consumers and the industry.”
The Pocket Perch comes in a range of fabrics and designs, as well as a picnic rug version, a dog bed, and a smaller version suitable for children.
