Hargreaves launch new low carbon waste trucks in County Durham

Hargreaves Logistics, in partnership with Durham County Council, has introduced a fleet of Iveco Bio-CNG vehicles.

These vehicles are powered by Bio-CNG (Compressed Natural Gas).

The new vehicles will reduce carbon emissions by around 80 percent and Nitrogen Oxide (Nox) emissions by 90 percent, compared to diesel alternatives.

The trucks use natural gas sourced from renewable waste feedstocks, providing an ‘environmentally friendly fuel solution verified and approved by the Department for Transport’.

Councillor John Shuttleworth, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for highways, rural communities, and community safety, said: “We’re pleased to have worked with Hargreaves to implement the new bio-gas vehicles into the county’s waste transport operations.

“The new vehicles will help us to reduce the carbon emissions of our overall waste management.

“This initiative makes up part of our Climate Emergency Response Plan, where we have set out actions to achieve ambitious targets of reducing emissions within our operations and of the wider county.

“By incorporating lower carbon vehicles into the county’s waste transport fleet, we can provide much greener services to residents.”

Rob Vickers, managing director at Hargreaves Logistics, said: “By introducing a low-carbon option we can lessen the environmental impact of essential logistics, while adding value to our service, helping our clients work towards their decarbonisation goals.

“The availability of biofuels is increasing, and prices are more competitive now.

“As the infrastructure develops for alternative fuels across the country, switching to greener options becomes more feasible, enabling our company to lessen the associated environmental impact.”

The addition of the new Iveco Bio-CNG vehicles is part of Hargreaves Logistics’ fleet replacement programme and one of many low-carbon fuel options the company is trialling.

The new fleet is described as a ‘significant investment’ in future technologies by Hargreaves Services Plc.
