Trenchers at Spanish City in Whitley Bay serves ‘best’ curry

Trenchers, in the Spanish City in Whitley Bay, offers a dining experience in an elegant Edwardian-style setting, complete with live music.

The elegant Edwardian-style restaurant was recognised in the 2026 Fry Awards, which celebrate excellence in fish and chip takeaways and restaurants nationwide.

It currently holds a 4.0 rating on TripAdvisor, with diners regularly commending the friendly service, festive atmosphere, and live music.

One reviewer said: “What a lovely place to have fish and chips.

“The service was first class.

“I had the muscles in curry sauce as a starter and it was a massive portion and very tasty.

“Fish and chips were very good with great batter.

“The fish shop curry was the best I’ve had and reminded me of that old school curry with raisins and apple.”

Another customer wrote: “Our food arrived promptly within 10 minutes.

“It was stupendous!

“One of the best fish and chip meals I have had (and I’ve had a LOT over the years).

“Crispy batter, chips were not greasy, the fish was chunky and ‘meaty’ and beautifully cooked.”

The menu offers cod and chips in three sizes, starting from £15.95.

Trenchers operates two locations in Whitby and Whitley Bay, both of which made it into the Fry Awards’ national top 10.

Winners are chosen following anonymous visits by mystery diners who assess food quality, cleanliness, staff expertise, value for money, ease of ordering, and social media presence.
