Teesdale fish and chip shop among the ‘best’ in British Pie Awards


The region was well represented at the 18th British Pie Awards, held in the self-styled UK pie capital, Melton Mowbray, in Leicestershire.

Staged as part of British Pie Week, there was a record 1,040 entries from across the country, giving the judges plenty to get their teeth into, in the various categories.

The supreme β€œPie of Pies” champion was judged to be a Chicken Kiev variety, from Baldy’s Pies, in Wigan.

But a clutch of awards came the way of entrants from the North East, with Middleton-in-Teesdale Fish and Chip Shop, in County Durham, taking home no less than nine accolades.

They included gold and silver awards in the Fish and Chip Shop Pie category, for chicken curry and fish pies, respectively.

The Middleton β€˜chippy’ also took silvers in the Steak and Kidney category, thanks to its piece de resistance red wine gravy, and in the Meat and Potato bracket, with a minted Wensleydale lamb and potato pie.

But it also picked up five bronze awards, including one for its bespoke Curried Goat pie.

B & T Kitson of Yarm earned a highly commended ratification for its traditional pork pie, in the home of the pork pie.

β€˜Hairy Biker’ Sy King’s Propa pie eatery in Sheepfolds, Sunderland, picked up bronze awards in the Steak and Ale, and Fusion Pie categories, with a lamb karma curry filling in the latter.

McFarlane Family Butchers in Barnard Castle brought home a further award for Teesdale, with its minted lamb pie earning a bronze in the Lamb Pie section.

Among other notable regional winners were The Woodman’s Arms, in Fellside, Whickham, Gateshead.

Its nine awards included a gold in the Beef and Vegetable section, for its Root of All Beef pie, and in the Pub Pie category, with its Marrokech lamb pie.

But there were also silver and bronze awards for The Skiff Inn, Gateshead, and The White Swan, at Dinnington, near Newcastle.
