Sunderland: Nun and businessman nominated for city honour
Sister Mary Scholastica and Paul Callaghan CBE have been put forward for Freedom of the City by Sunderland Labour Group in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the city.

“Those whose life’s work has benefitted Sunderland and its people.”

She has been based in the city since 1958 and became known as “Sunderlandβs Angel of Mercy” for her tireless charitable work.
Her efforts were highlighted in the BBC documentary Sea Cities.
Mr Callaghan, a businessman, philanthropist, and tech founder, has played a major role in Sunderlandβs economic, educational, and cultural development.
He is the founder and chairman of the Leighton Group and has served as chair of the University of Sunderland.
He was also a driving force behind the creation of the Music, Arts and Culture Quarter and Sunderland Culture.

Both nominees have devoted decades to improving the lives of Sunderland residents.
The Labour group plans to present the nominations to Full Council in the coming months.
If approved, a formal Freedom of the City ceremony will follow.
