Pub in County Durham village ‘unchanged by time’ is ‘amazing gem’
The Fox and Hounds, based in Cotherstone near Barnard Castle, has captured the hearts of visitors on TripAdvisor, earning 129 ‘excellent’ reviews.
Located in the heart of Teesdale, the pub has become a favourite for walkers and day-trippers exploring the picturesque countryside.
Cotherstone has also earned praise for its traditional charm and peaceful setting, often described as a place βunchanged by timeβ.
The village sits just south of the River Tees and is known for its stone cottages, surrounding fields and riverside walks at the junction of the River Balder and the River Tees.
Visitors have described Cotherstone as a “classic English village atmosphere” with a βslower pace of lifeβ and a βhidden gemβ feel.

The Fox and Hounds is open every day of the week and itsΒ menu celebrates classic British fare, including homemade pie with chunky chips and vegetables, and beer-battered haddock with chips and minted mushy peas.
One reviewer said: “Amazing gem of a pub we found here in Cotherstone after an eight mile walk.
“Sunday Dinner was fantastic and red hot and full of flavour.
“Everything was top quality tender beef and pork, gravy to die for and piping hot.”
Another diner praised its character and hospitality.
They said: “We found the Fox and Hounds by accident while looking for a place to eat near where we were staying.
“This was a real delight. Set in a beautiful village on the way to Barnard Castle.
“The food was excellent. I loved the cheese, mackerel and hazelnut pate. Lovely fish a chips and a delicious gratin.
“Great wines and some delicious beers and ciders. Really friendly staff just topped off a wonderful experience all round.”
