Power of Women programme continues in Hartlepool schools

St Bega’s Catholic Primary School in Hartlepool and St Gabriel’s Catholic Primary School in Ormesby will continue taking part in The Power of Women (PoW) Primary School Programme after receiving Β£2,500 from UKSE’s Community Support Fund.

The scheme, which runs in 24 Tees Valley schools, aims to raise aspirations, build confidence, and help pupils imagine a broader range of future careers by introducing them to new role models and opportunities.

Sophie McKenna, head of campaign and operations at Power of Women CIC, said: “We’re incredibly grateful for the funding and support from UKSE.

“As an organisation that relies entirely on donations and grants, support from local businesses and partners plays a crucial role in everything we do.

“Each school in our programme is partnered with local businesses that offer workplace visits, role models and inspirational activity days.

“We also organise university visits to raise aspirations and we’re proud to now have more than 100 student ambassadors championing the programme across the area.”

The programme was founded by the late Professor Jane Turner OBE, former pro vice chancellor for enterprise and business engagement at Tees University.

It includes workshops, visits, and activities involving local businesses and further education providers, all designed to broaden pupils’ horizons and combat gender stereotyping, which research shows can influence children as young as six.

Sarah Thorpe, regional manager for UKSE, said: “This year is UKSE’s 50th anniversary having been set up in 1975 to support businesses in steel areas with investments and workspace.

“We feel very much part of the Tees Valley community and our Community Support Fund has contributed to a range of projects in the region that improve life for people of all ages.

“It was a real pleasure to be involved in the interview panel at St Bega’s when the PoW school ambassadors were selected and to see so much enthusiasm and commitment.”

The PoW Primary School Programme encourages children to explore subjects and careers they might not otherwise consider, helping to broaden aspirations and challenge traditional thinking.

UKSE, a subsidiary of Tata Steel, provides finance and workspace support to businesses in steel regions. More information about its work can be found at www.ukse.co.uk
