Northumberland’s Fowberry Tower opens after restoration

Fowberry Tower, a mansion in Northumberland, is now available for exclusive private hire thanks to a scheme by The Fowberry Foundation, a registered charity focused on long-term preservation.

The house, known for its Strawberry Hill Gothic interiors, now welcomes private groups wishing to stay in a fully restored historic home.

Craig Marshall, trustee of The Fowberry Foundation, said: “Fowberry Tower has always been about stewardship rather than reinvention.

“The aim has been to return the house to meaningful use, generate income for its care, and allow people to experience it as it was intended – a welcoming, shared house at the centre of an estate.

“Every stay and every event contributes directly to the long-term preservation of this beautiful landscape and its ecological environment.”

The foundation’s restoration programme prioritised both conservation and viability, opting to operate the house as a lived-in, sustainable property that could generate income while staying true to its historical roots.

Eight en-suite bedrooms and a selection of grand entertaining rooms are available to guests, blending period features with modern comforts.

The Tower’s formal dining room seats up to 16 guests, making it suitable for private celebrations and dinners.

A large kitchen, equipped with an Aga and professional appliances, supports both relaxed family meals and chef-led experiences.

Other features include a wood-panelled whisky room for evening tastings and several reception rooms with log burners, each opening onto the surrounding lawns.

The foundation’s work extends beyond the house itself.

Fowberry Cider, which has completed its second successful year of producing single-orchard cider, is crafted in partnership with Phil Elliott of Northumbria Cider.

The cider is served exclusively at The Percy Arms in Chatton and the Old Chapel Cidery on the Etal Estate, with proceeds supporting the foundation’s work.

Volunteers have played a key role in restoring the orchards, contributing to what the foundation describes as an “excellent yield and outstanding quality” of cider apples.

Also on the estate is Fowberry Cottage, a two-bedroom property refurbished in 2025 with the help of volunteers.

Rated as a 4-star retreat, the cottage offers direct access to woodlands home to red squirrels, deer, and barn owls.

Guests can also follow the β€œTipsy Trail,” a scenic walk along the River Till that leads to The Percy Arms pub.

The Tower and estate are now open for bookings year-round.

Stays and events can be booked directly via the Fowberry Tower website or through Big House Experience, while Fowberry Cottage is available through the website and Airbnb.

All guest stays support the ongoing care and conservation of the house, estate, and surrounding landscape.

The Fowberry Foundation’s approach to conservation draws on the broader heritage of the estate and its place in the Northumberland landscape.
