Newcastle gentlemen’s club sees customers spend £900 on whisky
Whiskey Down, a £1 million gentleman’s club above Stein Bier Keller in Bigg Market, Newcastle, offers a selected array of whiskies from across the globe.
This selection has proven popular with patrons sampling everything from American bourbons and Irish whiskeys to premium Japanese malts.
Amongst the high-end brands showcased in custom-made glass cabinets within a wood-panelled lounge are Dalmore 18yr and Dalmore King Alexander III.
These are matured in American white oak ex-bourbon casks and aged Matusalem Oloroso Sherry casks.
The Macallan Rare Cask, from one of Scotland’s renowned distilleries, is also featured and is often regarded as one of the finest available on the market.
For £800, connoisseurs can enjoy Kentucky Owl, an American bourbon with a rich history dating back to 1879.
Production ceased in 1916 due to US prohibition laws but was revived a century later by a descendant of the distillery’s founder.
The venue says, for those with a more modest budget, single measures of these and other whiskies can be purchased.
The establishment extends its offerings, with a selection of spirits and champagnes, and a bespoke champagne lounge available for private hire and corporate events.
Rob Halliday of Tokyo Industries, the company behind the venture, said Mr Halliday said: “It’s a sumptuous, relaxing and welcoming environment and an ideal haven from the city’s noisier bars and clubs.
“Everyone is welcome – men and women – just to enjoy the surroundings or try our vast selection of whiskies and gins, they don’t have to have a lap dance.”
In addition to its drinks offering, Whiskey Down has ‘discreet, private rooms’ where lap dances are available, with a main area where girls also perform.
Whiskey Down operates from 9pm to 3am Sunday to Thursday, from 8pm on Fridays, and from 7pm on Saturdays.
Entry costs £10, with private dances starting from £25.
A membership scheme is set to be introduced shortly.
