New Shotley Bridge Indian restaurant to open in next month

Kushi is opening in the former Rumi’s restaurant on Front Street, and extensive renovation work has been undertaken at the site over recent weeks.

Bosses are hoping to be open either in the last week of March or the first week of April, and told The Northern Echo excitement has been building among residents.

“We have fully refurbished and gutted the place,” Jakob Cross, from the restaurant, said.

“It is going to be furnished to a high standard.

“It is completely different to anyone who has been in before, other than the windows, we have changed everything.”

Kushi is set to operate a takeaway and has a full licence, so will be offering a cocktail menu.

The business is owned by Abdul Salam, 44, who is no stranger to running Indian restaurants – his dad worked in the first ever Indian restaurant in Newcastle and his uncle ran the first to come to Morpeth.

But Shotley Bridge is an entirely new part of the North East for the owners, who have been speaking to other businesses in the village ahead of their opening.

“It is a new area for us,” Mr Cross, 24, said.

“We are quite excited and looking forward to meeting everyone.”
