Matt Vickers MP denies charging constituents Β£5 to see him
Stockton West MP Matt Vickers said the claims were a βdeliberate misrepresentationβ.
The Daily Mirror reported last week he advertised a coffee morning for locals to raise issues, but that those attending would have to pay a fiver to attend, which would go into his campaign funds, with neighbouring Labour MP Chris McDonald telling the paper: “Access to your MP should never be hidden behind a paywall”
But Vickers said: βThis appears to be a deliberate misrepresentation of what is simply a community coffee morning.
βNo one ever has to pay to speak to me. I hold regular surgeries, pop-up sessions and spend a great deal of time out in the community, speaking directly with residents.β
The MP, who is the only Conservative member of parliament in the North East, said there are multiple free opportunities for constituents to meet with him each week.
He said through these opportunities he engages with hundreds of people and supports many more throughout the year.
He continued: βThroughout the Easter recess I have been on the doorsteps speaking to many residents and do this week in, week out.
βThe invitation made this clear, and said, βThese arenβt designed to replace my regular surgeries which can be booked by contacting my office.β Local Labour MPs host similar events – with one last month costing Β£40.
βThis event is simply an additional, informal way for people to come along and have a conversation in a relaxed setting.
βThe small charge helps cover the cost of refreshments, and I do not believe it is appropriate to use taxpayersβ money for that purpose.β
