Made Smarter digital grants help Teesside firm transform
The Made Smarter Adoption North East programme, which helps small and medium-sized manufacturers grow through digital tools and technology, is offering up to Β£20,000 in grant funding for new equipment and Β£3,500 for technical advice.
A new cohort began on Wednesday, January 14, and businesses are being urged to enrol now to benefit from the scheme.
One company already seeing results is Middlesbrough-based Virasel Value Solutions Ltd, an engineering firm specialising in valve repair, servicing, and overhaul.
Sue Donnelly, director of operations at Virasel, said: “The Made Smarter Programme definitely gave me hope that we can make some really good digital changes which will support the business but, most importantly, support our staff.
“One of my main objectives is for us all, including me and Lee, to have a better home and work-life balance.
“The workshops were excellent β very practical, very relatable, both Andy and Alan were very knowledgeable and shared their real-life work experiences with us, which we would all relate too.

“I personally got a lot out of the workshops β I engaged and talked a lot about Virasel, what we do and the challenges we face, and how the Made Smarter programme can make our lives so much easier.”
Delivered in Tees Valley by RTC North, the programme provides a structured approach to digital adoption through workshops, expert support, and networking opportunities with other regional manufacturers.
Virasel used the funding to purchase a digital control valve test bench and worked with a consultant on engineering reporting.
Ms Donnelly said the changes have saved time and helped employees adapt to new technology.
She said: “Going digital will help us work more efficiently, without always working longer hours and the weekends.
“The funding is fantastic and I like the idea of having a consultant holding our hand, working with us and supporting us.”
The programme is run in partnership with the North East Combined Authority and supported by the UK Government and global businesses.
Participants complete three sessions and gain insights into how digital adoption can unlock growth and long-term resilience.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said the scheme is already making a difference.
Mr Houchen said: “This programme is providing our brilliant manufacturers direct access to the tools, expertise, and funding they need to ensure they maximise their growth.
“Through Made Smarter, weβre already seeing businesses across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool modernise and compete on a national and global stage.
“We have a real strength in manufacturing and ingenuity and Viraselβs team show just that.
“Made Smarter is there to help firms build on our strengths and make the most of new opportunities.
“I want more manufacturers to come forward, apply to the programme and make the most of whatβs on offer β itβs a fantastic opportunity to get ahead.”
Cllr Alec Brown, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and TVCA cabinet member for business growth and net zero, also welcomed the schemeβs impact.
Cllr Brown said: “Itβs great to see one of our regionβs vital manufacturers gain from this programme so it can grow.
“We need as many of our businesses β large and small β to grow sustainably and the support and funding on offer here has delivered results.”
Made Smarter offers a supported pathway to digital transformation for small and medium-sized manufacturers across the Tees Valley and North East, helping firms improve efficiency and adopt new technologies.
