The visit took place at Persimmon’s Harebell Meadows site near Stockton.

It was part of National Apprenticeship Week, which aims to highlight the benefits apprenticeships bring to young people, businesses, and the wider economy.

Mr Houchen said: “It was great to be out on site meeting apprentices learning their trade while earning a wage and building proper careers in construction.

“That includes support like the Apprentice Levy Matching Service, alongside wider work through the Youth Guarantee Trailblazer to help more young people get into work, training or apprenticeships in the first place.

“The result is more skilled workers, stronger businesses and real opportunity for people across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool.”

He met bricklaying apprentices working on the Harebell Meadows site.

Michael Johnson, regional apprenticeship manager for Persimmon, said: “It was great to host Mayor Houchen to meet some of our apprentices who came through from Stockton Riverside College.

“In the past 5 years, we’ve had over 600 young people complete an apprenticeship with Persimmon, so we’re always looking at new ways to inspire young people into the industry– particularly during National Apprenticeship Week.

“Construction has a wide range of fulfilling and exciting careers for young people, and apprenticeships provide fantastic opportunities for young people to start their career journey.”
