Frydayz of Shildon wins Best Fish and Chip Shop award

Frydayz of Shildon, run by Davinder Singh and his family, has been named Best Fish and Chip Shop in County Durham at the 2026 awards, after being voted for by their customers.

The black-tie ceremony was held at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on Sunday (March 22).

Mr Singh, 44, said it “felt amazing” after hearing the news, saying that the recognition was a reward for nine years of hard work.

He said: “It feels like all the hard work has paid off. The customers have voted for us, which makes it even more special.”

The takeaway, which first opened its doors in 2017, was started from scratch by Mr Singh, his partner Jasbal Kaur, 45, and their family after moving to the area from Leeds.

What started as their first business venture has since grown into a well-established local favourite with a loyal customer base.

The 44-year-old said: “It’s a family business. My sons and daughters are involved, and it’s been a real team effort from the beginning.”

Mr Singh said the response from the community has been “overwhelming”, and that he was grateful for the strong relationship the business has built with its customers over nearly a decade.

He said: “We’re very grateful. Thank you to everybody who voted for us, to all our customers and to our team. It wouldn’t have been possible without them.

 “We’re so lucky to be part of such a supportive community. Here’s to many more years of serving the very best.”
