County Durham steam train ride with fish and chips on offer
Tanfield Railway has confirmed the return of its fish and chip train rides following strong demand last year.
The heritage railway, which operates between County Durham and Gateshead, will run the 60-minute experiences throughout the year, with organisers expecting tickets to sell quickly.
The journeys, run in partnership with Fox & Edwards, take passengers on a round trip between Andrewβs House Station in Sunniside and East Tanfield.

Travellers ride in Victorian wooden carriages hauled by a steam locomotive, with meals served partway through the journey and enjoyed on the return leg.
Each ticket includes a portion of fish and chips, or an alternative option, along with a drink and a sweet treat.
Other menu choices include sausage and chips, and a vegetarian cheese patty with chips, with food selections made at the time of booking.
An online description of the event says the experience combines βheritage, scenery and one of Britainβs favourite mealsβ, inviting passengers to enjoy a nostalgic journey on what is described as the worldβs oldest railway.
Tickets for the 2026 fish and chip train rides start at Β£65 for two people, with prices increasing depending on group size.
Family tickets covering two adults and two children aged three to 11 are also available.
Children under three can travel free but are not provided with a meal.
Departures take place from Andrewβs House Station (NE16 5ET), where free parking is available.
The experience is wheelchair accessible, although advance booking is required, and one pre-booked dog per train is permitted.
Tanfield Railway dates back more than 300 years and uses authentic Victorian carriages, meaning passengers should expect traditional bench seating rather than modern facilities.
Some services may offer an upgrade to an open carriage with tables and large windows, subject to availability.
Bookings for the 2026 fish and chip steam train rides are now open via the Fox & Edwards website.
