North East tech firm to host ex-military career switch event

Opencast, a technology consultancy based in Byker, will hold the event at Hoults Yard on Tuesday, March 18, from 2.30pm to 6pm.

The event, titled ‘Military to Civilian Career Switches: How We Can All Benefit’, aims to show businesses how they can benefit from the skills of military veterans.

Richard Handley, Opencast’s client relationship director and a former captain in the Royal Artillery, said: “Our event is aimed at both companies thinking about employing ex-services personnel and also military veterans looking to meet regional employers.

“Throughout the event, our focus will be on the benefits of employing veterans but also how to break down the barriers to make it simpler for ex-services people to enter the civilian workforce.

“We’ll look at how being a forces-friendly employer can be particularly effective in building diverse and inclusive teams.”

The event will feature a panel discussion and an interactive breakout session.

The panel will include Ammar Mirza, executive chairman of the AmmarM Group and honorary colonel of 101 Regiment Royal Artillery, Ben Read, founder and CEO of Redeployable, Richard Handley, and Louise Kennedy, founder and managing director at Oculus HR.

Opencast’s chief people officer, Cate Kalson, will moderate the panel.

Lorna Madden, Opencast’s director of talent and workforce planning, said: “We hope employers attending the day will gain key insights into tapping into the veteran talent pool and also understand the strategies which can enhance the recruitment of former services personnel.

“Veterans attending will get an important opportunity to meet employers, many of whom are part of a strong and effective network wanting to help ex-service people.

“They’ll also have the opportunity to explore new and exciting career pathways.”

Mr Mirza added: “I’m grateful to Opencast for organising and hosting the Military to Civilian Career Switches event.

“It’s a great opportunity for regional employers to learn how employing former services personnel can benefit their companies.”

Opencast signed the Ministry of Defence-backed Armed Forces Covenant four years ago, confirming a commitment to serving military personnel, former servicemen and women, and reservists.

The company has also been recognised by the government-backed Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS), which acknowledges businesses that have provided exceptional support to the armed forces community.

The event is free, but booking is essential.
