Bentley’s Coffee Shop at Coulby Newham announces closure

Bentley’s Coffee Shop, located at Parkway Shopping Centre, was launched in 2019 when Martin Smith left his job as a supermarket manager and used his redundancy pay to start the first café in Coulby Newham.

The coffee chain is named after Martin’s partner Emily Bentley who also helps run it.

Taking to social media today (February 23), the owners posted: “After nearly seven years of hard work, dedication, and countless cups of coffee, we are very sad to announce the closure of our beloved Bentley’s site at Parkway Shopping Centre, Coulby Newham.

“Since opening our doors in 2019, we’ve shared so many special moments with you all.

“From the excitement of our early days, through the challenges and uncertainty of the Covid years, the world has changed enormously and, sadly, not always in ways that make it easier for small independent businesses like ours to thrive.

“We are incredibly grateful to our loyal customers, many of whom have become true friends, for your continued support, kindness, and community spirit over the years.

“And to our amazing team, who have dedicated so much of their time, energy and heart to Bentley’s, we cannot thank you enough. You are the reason it has been such a special place.”

Despite the closure of the café in Coulby Newham, the owners reassured customers that the chain is “still very much here”, with the other Northshore site in Stockton continuing to operate as usual.

The statement added: “While this chapter closes, Bentley’s is still very much here. You can continue to find us at our Northshore site in Stockton, where we look forward to welcoming you, and our corporate catering too.

Since the announcement, many longstanding customers took to social media, saying they were “devastated” about the news.

One person said: “Such sad news. Bentley’s has been a central part of Coulby for seven years. It will be sadly missed by all especially the wonderful staff who always made everyone welcome.”

Another person added: “Devastated, so sad, but look after yourselves first and foremost. Love and hugs to you all.”
