The Stag’s Head pub in Esh Winning announces closure

The Stag’s Head, in Esh Winning was given a £460,000 refurb by licensees Michael and Tracy Miller before it reopened in Summer 2019.

But the couple have now decided not to renew their lease with the landlords and the boozer served its final pints on Sunday (February 9) evening.

In a post on Facebook earlier this month licensees Michael and Tracy Miller said: “Our lease in The Stag’s Head ran out on November 18, 2024, after five years in the pub.

“While our decision, not an easy one, was made in early May that we would not be signing an extension of our lease we entered into negotiations with our landlord Star Pubs and Bars after they expressed their desire for us to remain. We have been trying ever since to reach a mutually acceptable agreement though this has been unsuccessful.

“We have remained in the pub while Star Pubs and Bars have undergone the process of finding a suitable applicant to take on the lease, as I’m sure we can all agree the last thing any of us want is another closed pub. However, this isn’t something that should be allowed to drag on forever.

“In the meantime, we would like to thank our regulars for their love and support over all these years. You have been a part of the most fantastic memories we will cherish forever. We thank you all for respecting our time and privacy whilst we operate in uncertain times.”

The pair made the pub family and dog-friendly and added food to its offering for the first time.

Regular punters expressed their disappointment at the news.
