Northern Rye in Newcastle named UK’s second best artisan bakery

Northern Rye, based in Ouseburn, was ranked number two in the ‘Bakers Dozen’ list by industry experts British Baker.

The bakery was founded by Robbie Livingstone who became a full-time baker in 2017. After a crowdfunding campaign, he officially opened Northern Rye’s first shop in 2020, just down from the production bakery.

The firm expanded from its Ouseburn shop last year with a new production site in North Shields and even provided Beyonce with croissants when she was touring in Sunderland.

The Telegraph previously described its bread as “brilliant”.

The ‘Bakers Dozen’ list of the 13 best artisan bakeries is compiled by by magazine British Baker.

Editor Amy North said: “Each of the 13 bakeries on the list has been recognised by industry experts and their peers as a beacon of dedication, passion, and skill, as demonstrated through lovingly handcrafted products and by the people who make them.”

On Northern Rye the magazine said: “Northern Rye has made progress over the last year – not only has it climbed another two places on the Bakers’ Dozen, making the podium for the first time, but it has also moved to a larger production bakery and opened a new shop in North Shields.

“Another site in Harbour House is also on the agenda for the near future which will take the total to three. The bakery, founded by Robbie Livingstone in 2017, now has more production space allowing it to extend its range which includes bestselling country sourdough, baguettes, almond croissants, cinnamon buns, cruffins and pecan swirls, into the likes of pre-order celebration cakes and tarts, and a wider bread offering.”

It’s not the first time the bakery has received award recognition, previously being named best in the North East at the National Bakery Awards.

British Baker describes an artisan bakery as one where goods are made by skilled bakers by hand, and often using more time consuming or traditional methods, and higher quality ingredients.
