Darlington selfโ€‘storage site closes with immediate effect

A sign on the shuttered window of The Store Room on Whessoe Road says the closure is due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’.

Buckinghamshire-based HDDL Limited, which owns the building used by the self-storage company, went into administration on May 11.

The Store Room, as a wider business, is not affected, but the Darlington branch has been removed from the business’ website and a phone line for the Whessoe Road venue redirects to the administrators.

The Store Room took on the former Poundstretcher site in 2022 and opened the Darlington branch in March 2024 after revamping the building with a range of differentโ€‘sized units.

The sudden closure has left customers seeking clarity about what happens next to their stored belongings and existing rental agreements, with administrators for HDDL saying they are working to track down those who have storage on the site.

Administrators KR8 said their focus is on working through the administration process while keeping customers updated.

Mark Blackman, joint administrator, said: โ€œOur focus is on working through the Administration process efficiently while ensuring clarity for customers and stakeholders who may be affected.

“We are currently dealing with a high volume of enquiries and thank customers for their patience.โ€

The Store Room did not respond to The Northern Echo’s request for comment.
