Nuthatch landlord honoured for life‑saving CPR in bar

Simon Hatfield, who runs The Nuthatch in Middlesbrough, was honoured at the National Pubwatch Safer Night Time Economy Awards held in London on Tuesday, May 12, for his actions during an incident in September 2025.

A customer collapsed while having a drink with family and stopped breathing.

Mr Hatfield immediately began administering CPR and managed to revive the man before emergency services arrived.

He said: “I am incredibly proud to receive this recognition from National Pubwatch, but it truly belongs to the whole team at The Nuthatch.

“Their quick thinking, teamwork, and willingness to step in and help when it mattered most made all the difference that day.

“We are simply grateful that Colin recovered and is back with his family.”

The award was one of 13 Bravery Awards presented at the event, which was sponsored by Diageo.

Steve Baker OBE, chairman of National Pubwatch, said: “It is a real privilege to recognise Simon Hatfield for his actions saving the life of this customer.

“He showed tremendous courage and professionalism, stepping in to ensure the safety of the customer in the late-night economy.”

The awards also recognised pub and bar staff for intervening in knife attacks, preventing suicide attempts, protecting vulnerable customers, and responding to drink-spiking incidents.

Mr Baker added: “We would also like to thank Diageo for sponsoring these awards and ensuring that recipients receive recognition at such a prestigious event.”
