Located above a valley with sweeping views across Hawnby Hill, the country inn combines traditional features with a more modern touch, offering open fires, antique-style dΓ©cor, fires in winter and a beer garden in summer, which many visitors say “stand out”.

One recent guest described it as a β€œlovely dog-friendly village pub” with β€œvery friendly staff and locals”, adding: β€œFood, service and people were all lovely. Would highly recommend. Gem of a place.”

The pub sits at the heart of Hawnby, a village often described as a β€œhidden gem” within the North York Moors National Park.

Known for its dark skies, historic buildings and sense of remoteness, the area attracts those looking to escape busier tourist spots.

Visitors frequently pair a trip to The Owl with a countryside walk, with routes up Hawnby Hill offering panoramic views over the surrounding moorland and the River Rye below.

β€œIt’s a welcoming country pub in stunning surroundings,” one reviewer wrote, praising both the location and the quality of the food.

The Owl itself dates back to the 19th century and has been refurbished in recent years, while still retaining the feel of a traditional rural inn.

It now offers nine letting rooms, alongside a bar, restaurant and outdoor terrace.

Food is a major draw, with the pub earning recognition from the Michelin Guide for its β€œhearty, unfussy and downright tasty” dishes.

Diners regularly highlight the Sunday lunches and classic Yorkshire fare, with one visitor praising β€œlots of veg, great meat and a super Yorkshire pudding.”

Others point to more inventive dishes and seasonal specials, with another review noting β€œquality food and friendly service” alongside a menu that blends traditional favourites with modern options.

The atmosphere is another recurring highlight.

Guests often mention the “cosy interior”, especially in colder months when the fire is lit. β€œAbsolutely beautiful building, modern yet cosy,” one visitor said, adding that the relaxed, dog-friendly setting made for an enjoyable evening.

Even finding the pub can feel like part of the experience, according to those who have been.

One visitor recalled almost missing it before stumbling across the entrance, saying: β€œI’m so glad we did; a lovely setting. We would definitely recommend having lunch here.”
