Tindale Deli in Bishop Auckland makes Echo top ten

Janine Goldsborough, who has been running Tindale Deli in Bishop since October 2024, bought the venue after her friend Lyn Neilson suddenly passed away.Β

Mum-of-one Lyn was just 53-years-old when she died on August 27, 2024 – with Janine describing her as “friendly, generous, and a diamond”.

Months after Lyn’s passing, Janine, 55, decided to carry on her legacy at the Tindale Crescent shop, a place that was “her life”.

17 months later, mum Janine is now celebrating being named on the shortlist of The Northern Echo’s Best Sandwich Shop 2026.Β

Janine said she couldn’t be prouder carrying on Tindale Deli on behalf of her “amazing” former colleague, who was also a grandmother-to-one.

Janine said she has kept everything at the deli since taking the reins – simply because she learnt from the very best.Β

She explained: β€œLyn was lovely. She was the most friendly and generous person- but she also called a spade a spade! She was a diamond, and we worshipped her.

“She started the business about eight years ago, the shop was her life.

“I was working with Lyn for a few years before she passed away. One minute I was speaking to her one morning, and the next minute we were being told to say our goodbyes.

β€œAfter she died, her husband asked if I would like to buy it, so I took it over from October last year, and I have kept everything exactly the same.”

Janine said the business, which she runs alongside Jane Hallimond, has been β€œbrilliant” since: β€œEveryone has been supporting us because they know Lyn made a good sandwich.Β

β€œI always say I was taught by the best.Β

β€œWe do hot and cold sandwiches, salad boxes, hot pork and stuffing sandwiches, and sausage and bacon sandwiches too.Β

β€œJacket potatoes are popular – and spicy chicken is one of our favourite sandwiches.”

Janine admitted she was surprised to be nominated in the competition: β€œYou always worry because when someone new takes over a shop people say β€˜oh it is not the same’.Β

β€œBut it hasn’t been like that.Β

β€œWe were devastated when she died, she was a large part of our lives. She was an amazing woman and friend and I couldn’t be more proud to be doing it for her.”

Tindale Deli is one of ten named in our competition this year, with others including Chittock’s, in Bishop Auckland, Fresh, in Darlington, and D&J Meats in Willington
