Β£125k project to restore historic Whitby Old Town Hall
A new funding bid from North Yorkshire Council aims to repurpose the historic Grade II* Listed Old Town Hall in Whitby and bring it back into community use as a βvibrant heritage venueβ.
βThe council is seeking Β£55,000 from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and funding of Β£70,000 will be sought from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
ββThe 18th-century Old Town Hall has been undergoing a Β£1.2 million renovation project, funded by the Government and North Yorkshire Council (NYC)
βOnce completed, the space will celebrate the rich history of the building, the Market Place, and the wider story of Whitby, creating an engaging destination for residents and visitors alike, according to plans.
βThe funds would cover the revenue costs associated with community engagement and operation for the first couple of years until Whitby Town Council, which has expressed an interest in taking over the building, can establish a βsustainable modelβ.
βHowever, if the revenue is not secured, the building will not open, North Yorkshire Council said.
ββThe allocated funding will provide essential tools and resources to transform the Old Town Hall into a vibrant destination where the local community can actively engage with its offerings.
ββPlanned enhancements include the installation of interactive screens and digital maps, similar to those found in museums, as well as a projector for displaying videos and presentations during events,β a report on the funding application states.
βIt adds: βAdditionally, a portion of the funding will be dedicated to improving the buildingβs safety and security through the purchase and installation of a modern CCTV system.β
βThe project aims to revitalise the town centre by creating an βattractive, multi-functional space that increases footfall and strengthens the local economyβ.
βThe councils said that by introducing flexible uses to the Old Town Hall, such as community events, cultural programming, and small business opportunities, it supports the goal of resilient high streets and supports local enterprise.
βNYCβs report concludes: βThe Old Town Hall is a key heritage asset, and its restoration reflects the Combined Authorityβs commitment to heritage-led regeneration.
ββPreserving this historic asset while adapting it for modern needs enhances Whitbyβs identity and visitor appeal.β
