Council health and safety report reveals football injury at school

The member of staff, employed by Redcar and Cleveland Council and working in one of the borough’s schools, suffered a β€œmajor injury” when they were struck by the football, fracturing their wrist.

A report for a council scrutiny committee also said between April 2025 and February this year there had been a further 12 reportable injuries where the time off sick that resulted extended to more than seven days.

These included a worker who was struck by a moving vehicle suffering an arm injury; a member of staff who tripped and fell into a wooden door frame injuring their head; a worker who slipped down stairs injuring their knee and another who slipped on a wet surface resulting in a leg injury.

Under legislation such incidents have to be reported to the Health and Safety Executive by employers if they are deemed major, or lead to in excess of seven days sick.

The update said most accidents at the council in 2025/26 continued to be the result of injuries caused by handling, lifting or carrying an item (28 per cent) followed by a slip or trip (24 per cent).

To date this financial year 635 working days had been lost from injury accidents.

Meanwhile, 20 reports of threatening behaviour or assault had also been received by the council on behalf of staff, although no details of any injuries associated with the latter were given.
