Cummins plans to expand Darlington factory with new jobs


The proposal by Cummins to build a new facility next to its existing base on Yarm Road has been welcomed by Darlington Borough Council, which has agreed to transfer land to support the project.

The proposed development on Salters Lane would see Cummins significantly invest in its Darlington facility, which has been operating since 1965.Β 

Stephen Harker, council leader, welcomed the additional jobs that will be created.

He told councillors: β€œStaff at Cummins see this as a huge opportunity that doesn’t come along very often. It gives them much more security in Darlington for the near future.”

The Darlington facility produces world-class engines used in industries across the globe and remains a key part of Cummins’ global operations.Β 

A council report adds: β€œThe factory extension represents investment into Darlington and the potential to create new jobs, supporting economic growth, as well as providing a substantial business rates income for the council.”

The proposed development would be accessed through a road initially created to service the wider Ingenium Parc development site.

Cabinet members unanimously supported the release of land to the firm.Β 

Councillor Matthew Roche, cabinet member for health and housing, said: β€œThis is a win-win.

“Cummins are very embedded within our borough and they do a lot of good work to support a whole range of services.

“This is a really important business for this council to deal with and this project will support investment and cement the ongoing relationship that we have.”

Councillor Mandy Porter, cabinet member for resources, added: β€œIt’s a fantastic opportunity for our town and the economy, and we should celebrate the impact this will have on new jobs and economic development.”

A planning application for the proposed expansion will be considered by Darlington Borough Council in due course.Β Β 

Steve Morley, Darlington Plant Manager, said: β€œLast year we celebrated 60 years of manufacturing in Darlington, a milestone made possible by the strength of our people and this community.

β€œSecuring the Salters Lane site is an important step in our next chapter, enabling us to expand our facilities, grow capability and create new opportunities for the future. It reflects our continued commitment to Darlington and confidence in its long‑term success.”
