Smokin’ Joe’s Guisborough could be opening in Norton

Smokin’ Joe’s closed its Guisborough restaurant on December 21, with owner Joseph Smith citing financial pressures and the wider economic climate.

Now posts from Smokin’ Joe’s and two other businesses suggest the brand may be reopening in Norton, Stockton, at a venue occupied by The Twisted Peel and The Twisted Tap Room.

The Twisted Peel operates as a premium cocktail bar on the ground floor, with The Twisted Tap Room upstairs serving sports, music and craft beer.

Recent social media activity from all three businesses is fuelling speculation of a new chapter.

On Smokin’ Joe’s Facebook page, a photo of The Twisted Peel bar was posted alongside the words: “It’s confirmed… Norton Stockton here we come …”

Smokin’ Joe’s had also closed a previous site in Kirby, before announcing the end of trading in Guisborough.

In an emotional video shared at the time, Mr Smith said: “With a heavy heart, I have got to announce Smokin’ Joe’s Guisborough will be closing on December 21. So the 21st of this month will be our last day ever trading out of Smokin’ Joe’s in Guisborough.

“To be honest, this has taken a while to come to this decision.

“I do believe it is for the best, and it has taken a lot to process it, you know, it is not an easy decision to make at all.”

The Fountain Street restaurant opened in March 2022 and gained national attention after going viral for its responses to negative reviews, while also building a reputation for its burgers.

Mr Smith said money pressures had forced the closure, adding: “In a nutshell, it’s a financial matter – the economy ain’t working for us.

“Big shout out to all our loyal fans and supporters. You guys have probably kept the wheels turning for longer than they would have otherwise. We appreciate all of you, a lot of respect for everyone who has come through the doors, anyone who has used us…

“It’s the end of a chapter, not the end of the story. Thank you to all our staff and customers. Please do use us and come and try the food if you haven’t already, it’s never too late.”

Customers reacted with shock and sadness at the closure.

One said: “Really sad times that things like this are happening to any business, even worse when it’s a really good one, which is excellent value for money and such good food. Gutted for you all there and wish you all the best for the future.”

Another added: “Aww, such a shame, memories will last forever though! Good luck to whatever adventure your on next.”
