Chester-le-Street Hollathans announces closure and revamp


Hollathans, the much-loved Chester-le-Street pub, announced it will be closing its doors temporarily, to undergo a full renovation in the New Year (January 2).

As well as a revamp, the announcement revealed the pub will also be taken over by two experienced County Durham business partners, with extensive experience in the hospitality sector.

The announcement on social media said: β€œFrom January 2, 2026, Hollathan’s will be closing temporarily for a full renovation, as the business is officially taken over by Richard Nellis and Susan Hutchinson Β – and trust us when we say, this is something special.

β€œRichard and Susan are long-standing friends and business partners with an incredible track record. Richard is the driving force behind two highly successful restaurants in Newcastle, alongside other thriving businesses within the construction industry.

β€œSusan is the owner of a well-known and much-loved salon right here in Chester-le-Street, with a reputation built on quality, creativity and attention to detail.

β€œTogether, they bring vision, experience and big ideas – and the plans they have for Hollathan’s are nothing short of exciting.”

In response to the announcement, soon to be new owner Susan Hutchinson thanked everyone for the support.

She said: β€œThank youΒ to everyone and thank you all for your supportive kind comments.

β€œChester-le-Street is a town Richard and I love (we’re both born and bred).

β€œWeΒ want to see it back thriving for everyone who lives in our town to enjoy – we promise to do our utmost to deliver.

β€œWe will update you very soon – we take over in January 2026.

β€œSee you all very soon.”

Many locals took to social media to share their excitement for the new venture.

One person said: β€œCan’t wait to see what you guys do with the place and help make Chester the destination for a great night out, like it used to be!”

Another person commented: “Amazing. I can’t wait to hear more. This is going to be the BIGGEST thing around. I know how hard you both work to bring the best of the best.”

While more information on the revamp is being kept under wraps, the owners promised it will be a β€œnew era” for Chester-le-Street.

The post said: β€œWe wish we could tell you everything now… but we’re holding back, just a little. What we can say is that this renovation will completely transform Hollathan’s, while keeping the heart and soul that so many of you love.
