The Rose and Crown is described as an 18th-century inn in the picturesque village of Romaldkirk amidst the North Pennines. 

They have 14 unique rooms and are even pet-friendly!

One recent five star review stated: “Fantastic food, friendly and helpful staff, good deals off season, cosy and welcoming atmosphere. Lots of good walking directly from the pub. Clean and well appointed rooms. Wine from about £30 bottle in restaurant. Very cosy bar with traditional feel and log fire.”

2. Seaham Hall, Seaham

Seaham Hall is described as a beautiful, luxurious five-star boutique hotel with fascinating history located on a cliff top.

Seaham Hall have nine different room types, one that is pet friendly with some including a dining area, one with a hot tub and even some with a private terrace- all set at different price points. 

One recent five-star review said: “We’ve had a really amazing stay in one of Seaham Halls junior suites, all the amenities you need with a nice modern decor and a beautiful bathroom. The spa is very well equipped and you have a nice 24 hour window to use it when staying overnight.

“We had dinner at the dining room, really nice Mediterranean-inspired dishes, relaxed atmosphere and good service. Our stay was of great value and certainly one that we’ll remember, thank you very much to every member of the team!”

3. Headlam Hall Country Hotel & Spa, Headlam

Headlam Hall is described as an independent country house hotel with a luxury spa and golf course. The restaurant also serves ‘award winning food made with local produce’.

They have 38 rooms spread between the converted coach house, the stable block and a purpose built spa. 

A recent five star review said: “The rooms are beautiful we’ve stayed in the manor different rooms and the spa rooms (lift straight into spa there ) spa area lovely always great cheery staff and very helpful , great services facials massages etc . The restaurant that’s in the spa area is wonderful and have as little or as much as you want to order.”

4. Travelodge Darlington Hotel, Darlington

Travelodge Darlington may surprise some but it has managed to bag number 4 on the Trip Advisor’s best-rated hotels in County Durham and even has the title of ‘Number 1’ out of all the hotels in Darlington. 

With this hotel you get what you pay for and always know what to expect which is what appears to be the common theme throughout the five star reviews left on Trip Advisor. 

One recent five-star review said: “I’ve stayed here a few times when going to the football in Middlesbrough. There’s loads of free parking, the staff are friendly and helpful, it’s very quiet and spotlessly clean. I really can’t fault this place and there’s a great fish and chip shop just a couple of minutes away.”

5. Rockliffe Hall, Darlington

Rockliffe Hall is often home to Middlesbrough Football Club as they use their grounds for training, and has even hosted the current England Squad for training last year. 

It is a five red star resort hotel, set in the 18th century estate on the banks of the River Tees. 

There are 61 rooms at the hall ranging from standard double rooms to suites which have a number that are dog friendly too!

One five-star reviewer said: “A Christmas to remember! We did the 3 night break over Christmas 2024 and the service, food and atmosphere was impeccable. We are firm fans of the hotel and spa and visit regularly but felt the food went up a notch in recent months and the service too.

“We both had treatments and said it was the most relaxed we had been in a longtime. I felt the staff couldn’t do enough to help us make magical moments for our little boy and for that we really appreciate the efforts.”
