Smithfield Awards: Coates Butchers in Coxhoe ‘best in UK’
Coates Butchers clinched the three gold awards in a prestigious craft butchery awards ceremony.
The Coxhoe based butcher picked up awards for its low carb, chia seed and almond pork sausage in the ‘Innovative Sausage’ category, dry aged flat iron steak in the ‘Best Butchers Steak’ category and traditional corned beef pie in the best hot eating pie category.
The team at Coates Butchers are now off to London next month to see if their gold award-winning products will go one step further and pick up the coveted diamond award, presented to the best of the best in each of the eleven categories.
A cook-off, selected from a shortlist of the diamond award winners, will be judged at Butchers Hall on the day of the awards by an esteemed panel of judges to determine which product from which butcher will be crowned ‘Supreme Champion’ and awarded the Smithfield Platinum Award.
Categories include Artisan Home-cured Bacon, Best Black Pudding, BBQ Product, Best Butcher’s Steak, Traditional Pork Sausage and Best Traditional Pork Pie.
Coates Butchers products were judged at an extensive judging session at the City of Glasgow College last month, by respected industry professionals, journalists and foodies.
Products were evaluated using a points system, with the best products awarded Bronze, Silver or Gold.

An award will also be presented to the Q Guild Young Butcher of the Year – open to all aged under 24 and designed to recognise and reward the UK’s up-and-coming talent who represent the very future of the industry sector.
