Peterlee dad launches taxi business after life-saving surgery
Mark Dunning, 46, from Peterlee, became seriously ill with ulcerative colitis, a condition that changed his life.
After nearly dying and undergoing 14 hours of gruelling surgery, Mr Dunning found himself on a long road to recovery which left him unable to return to work.
However, following a further three surgeries and having adapted to the illness and able to manage the symptoms that come with ulcerative colitis, Mr Dunning decided the time was right for a return to work.Mark Dunning (Image: Supplied)
Mr Dunning, who is dad to 16-year-old Josh and 12-year-old Poppy, said: “I was keen to go back to work but I had to find something that gives me the flexibility I need given the health challenges I still face because of the condition.
“After speaking to a friend of mine who became a taxi driver after being made redundant, he really sold it to me and was a massive help.
“It seemed like something that could work for me, so I did some research and spoke with Business Durham for advice on how to launch the business.
“I did all of my training through Durham County Council and last month was awarded my joint private hire and Hackney carriage licence, and SR8 Taxis was launched.”
Mr Dunning added: “Since launching SR8 Taxis, I feel like a different person.
“Whilst the past few years have been rewarding because of the time I have been able to spend with my kids, it has also been tough.
“But with this job I can work hours that suit me.”
“Now, I am looking forward to the future and making a real success of my business.”
